From soldier to founder
of the Society of Jesus
- 1491. Ignatius of Loyola is born.
- 1505. He moves into the house of the Chief Accountant of
Castile,
in Arévalo. - 1517. He becomes a man of the court and palace.
- 1521. He was wounded in a battle in the ciudadela (an old fortification surrounding the old city) of Pamplona, comes
back to Loiola and starts his conversion. - 1522. He begins his pilgrimage to the Holy Land passing
through
Arantzatzu, Montserrat... - 1523. He starts his university life in Barcelona, Alcalá, París, which
lasts 12 years. - 1535. He leaves Paris and comes back to Loiola in Azpeitia, his home village.
- 1540. He founds the Society of Jesus.
- 1541. He was elected general of the Society..
- 1556. He dies in Rome on 31 July.
Universal Saint
Ignatius of Loyola was beatified in the year 1609 and canonized on 12 March, 1622.
The commemorative acts of the 450 anniversary of the St. Ignatius’s death will take place in Loiola between 29 June and 3 September, 2006.
In the year 2006, the fifth centenary of the birth of St. Francis Xavier in Navarre and Pedro Fabro in Saboya is also celebrated.
Xavier and Pedro shared home and studies with Ignatius in Paris ten years before the foundation of the Society of Jesus and they were the first companions in the cause of Ignatius of Loyola.
