Religious ProgrammeSt. Ignatius of Loyola is nowadays more alive than ever

This year 2006, the Society of Jesus is aimed at celebrating the triple jubilee with a call for the reflection and deeper analysis of the faith in God, as well as the current commitment of the Order of Ignatius to the faith, justice and dialogue between culture and religions, a dialogue which is intended to be transferred until the present society, opening the doors of participation for the lay people.

The Society of Jesus, by developing an evangelical and humanitarian labour all over the world, exercising the teaching in Universities and Colleges, working with the poor in the third world, crying out for justice together with the oppressed people, with its innovative capacity, has made St. Ignatius be nowadays more alive than ever.

Musical Programme Ignatius of Loyola, his time, his legacy and music

The programming of the cycle of concerts commemorating the 450 anniversary of St. Igantius of Loyola’s death has taken into account historical, temporal and geographical parameters, related at all times to his figure as well as his great work: the Society of Jesus. The cycle is intended to offer, picking up from different styles, a variety of musical sensitivities which, because of different reasons, accompanied St. Ignatius and his work throughout his life and history.

The first reference taken into account has been his origin. A concert has been programmed with music by two contemporary composers: Juan de Anchieta –born in Azpeitia- and Gonzalo Martínez de Bizkargi –born in Azkoitia, in order to put St. Ignatius into that setting. The concert will be in charge of the Peñaflorida Chapel.

The relation of St. Ignatius with a more global historical and cultural setting has been established in a second and necessary reference. For that, a programme including performances by contemporary Iberian composers of the saint has been selected. The concert will be performed by Carlos Mena, countertenor and Juan Carlos Rivera, vihuela.

The design of a cycle with these characteristics cannot overlook the relation existing between the expansion of the work of the Society of Jesus and music, as a universal vehicle of understanding. Two geographical areas have been taken into consideration in order to provide a plural image as well as assessing the universal importance of this task of dissemination: Asia and America. The link of the Society of Jesus with the Asian world is represented by a programme that contains works related to the Jesuit legacy in China. In this case, the concert will be performed by the XVIII-21-MUSIQUE DES LUMIÉRES group. The American task of the Society of Jesus has its evidence in the performance of a Mass, by an author who remains anonymous, which is a part of the musical legacy from the missions of Chiquitos. The concert will be performed by the Musical Company.

Finally, it has been impossible to obviate the contribution of the composers belonging to
the Society of Jesus itself. That is the reason why a concert has been programmed with
performances for organ composed by Jesuits, which will be interpreted by Esteban Elizondo.
